Welcome to First Presbyterian Church of Independence Iowa!

I want to make you aware of two things that we are doing at First Church that are making a difference in people's lives.  As we focus on reversing the arrow we are intentionally looking for ways to make our community better.  We are doing exactly that.

Last Saturday night our Uncorked group sponsored a wine tasting to support Big Brothers Big Sisters.  This is the organization that runs the mentoring program in our schools.  Friends, the event greatly exceeded our expectations.  A year ago we had about 60 people attend and raised $500.  This year we had almost 100 people and raised $3,000.  This was outstanding.  It was a real privilege for Rev. Hougen and Jon Holland to give Jeannie Neely of Big Brothers Big Sisters a check.

Operation Family Pack is a program of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to support families with school aged children during the summer months with extra food.  Most of us are aware that having the kids home during the summer is a real drain on our food bill.  Each week we are bagging up and distributing food bags to over 120 area children.  It is great to see so many people volunteer to put bags together.  Our church is happy to sponsor this because it does make a difference in peoples lives.

Making a difference.  Its what Jesus calls us to do.  Its the kind of people God wants us to be.  People who are adding value to the community in which they live.  And it is by adding value that we create the kind of place where everyone can move farther on.

Pastor John

TOURNIER FAMILY HOUSEWARMING SHOWER

Our church is sponsoring the Dean and Angie Tournier family who lost everything in a tornado.  If you would like to help, you may go to the gift registry at Walmart, Target, or Kohl's and purchase a gift from their wish list or a gift card.  All gifts should be dropped off at our church by this Friday, August 29th.  Cash donations may be left in the church office.  Please contact Ruth Duritsa or Judy Hess if you have any questions.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR AIR CONDITIONING PROJECT

Property & Finance is looking for financial assistance with the air conditioning project.  (Cost is around $14,000.)  If you remember the hot summers, now is the time to get involved.

PLASTIC BAGS ARE NEEDED

Plastic bags are needed for the Backpack program.  Please start saving these bags and bring them to the church at your convenience throughout the year.  Thanks.
